The RAF Museum in Peterhead, founded by volunteer Mark Salt, presents Czech wartime links.

The journey to the north is long, but I knew an interesting meeting awaited me. Mark has spent more than six years researching and collecting everything connected with the former RAF base at Peterhead.

During the Second World War, the airfield hosted many British and Allied squadrons but I wanted to know everything about the 313th Czechoslovak Fighter Squadron and the 68th Night Fighter Squadron, and also the 312th Czechoslovak Fighter Squadron, that was not based here permanently, but it had a detachment operating from Peterhead, while its main base was at Skeabrae.

Also 310th Czechoslovak Fighter Squadron who were based at RAF Castletown did some work here. The main task was to protect north eastern Scotland from German aircraft, defend the shipping routes and convoys, with some of the ships heading to Scapa Flow, the main base of the Royal Navy’s Home Fleet.

Since the museum opened, I was the first Czech visitor, and Mark enthusiastically showed me everything he had discovered about our pilots. A Czech flag flying above the building was a very nice touch — the museum regularly changes the Allied flags of the squadrons that served at Peterhead. Inside the building, four rooms display all of Mark’s work. Because the museum is open only once a month, both the building and the hangars were full of activity. Mark works for the police, but wanted to contribute to the community with something different. His collection keeps growing, a few months ago with a brand new Committee the Museum became RAF Peterhead Museum & Heritage Society SCIO, a newly registered charity, with the aim of preserving the history of the airfield and the RAF airmen who served there.

We walked along the runway from which our men once took off into the clouds in their Spitfires, as well as other aircraft types that operated at Peterhead — such as the Blenheim, Beaufighter, Mosquito, Mustang and Hurricane. One of the two hangars still standing dates back to the Second World War, though many other wartime buildings have disappeared. Today, only photographs show us where our men lived or where the social hall once stood — the place where they danced with local girls and with members of the WAAF (Women’s Auxiliary Air Force).

Today the site is home to the Buchan Aero Club, and the airfield is known as Longside Airfield. Cesta na sever je dlouhá, ale věděla jsem, že mě čeká zajímavé setkání. Mark strávil více než šest let výzkumem a shromažďováním všeho, co souvisí s bývalou základnou RAF v Peterheadu.

Během druhé světové války zde působilo mnoho britských a spojeneckých perutí, ale já jsem chtěla vědět vše o 313. československé stíhací peruti, 68. noční stíhací peruti, a také o 312. československé stíhací peruti, která zde sice nebyla trvale umístěna, ale měla v Peterheadu odloučený let, zatímco její hlavní základna byla ve Skeabrae.

Také 310. československá stíhací peruť, která byla umístěna na RAF Castletown, zde vykonávala určité úkoly.

Hlavním úkolem bylo chránit severovýchodní Skotsko před německými letadly, bránit lodní trasy a konvoje, z nichž některé směřovaly do Scapa Flow, hlavní základny domácí flotily Royal Navy.

Od otevření muzea jsem byla první českou návštěvnicí a Mark mi s nadšením ukázal vše, co o našich letcích zjistil. Česká vlajka vlající nad budovou byla velmi milým gestem — muzeum pravidelně střídá spojenecké vlajky perutí, které v Peterheadu sloužily. Uvnitř budovy čtyři místnosti představují veškerou Markovu práci. Protože je muzeum otevřené jen jednou měsíčně, byl v budově i hangárech čilý ruch. Mark pracuje u policie, ale chtěl komunitě přispět něčím jiným. Jeho sbírka stále roste a před několika měsíci se s novým výborem muzeum stalo RAF Peterhead Museum & Heritage Society SCIO, nově registrovanou charitativní organizací, jejímž cílem je uchovat historii letiště a letců RAF, kteří zde sloužili.

Prošli jsme se po ranveji, z níž naši muži kdysi stoupali do mraků ve svých Spitfirech, stejně jako v dalších typech letadel, která v Peterheadu operovala — například Blenheim, Beaufighter, Mosquito, Mustang a Hurricane. Jeden ze dvou hangárů, které zde dodnes stojí, pochází ještě z druhé světové války, i když mnoho dalších válečných budov už zmizelo. Dnes nám fotografie ukazují, kde naši muži bydleli nebo kde stála společenská místnost — místo, kde tančili s místními dívkami a příslušnicemi WAAF (Women’s Auxiliary Air Force).
